Title: Hitting A Straight Lick With A Crooked Stick
I am sad this book is done! I absolutely loved this take on such an otherwise woeful tale. Mz. Hurston was an absolutely amazing writer. The dialect tripped me up at first until I got the hang of it. After that the phrases rolled off my imaginative tongue.
This took place in the young 1900’s. Alternating between a small black town in Florida named Eatonville, near Orlando, and the neighborhoods of Harlem, NY. It told of men and women that led tough lives but was told through a lens of humor. This collection of short stories brought me to know intimately the many characters that made up this small town and small neighborhood in Harlem. Characters that dealt with all the obstacles that people now-a-days encounter as well. Cheatin’ wives, Cheatin’ husbands, domestic violence, young love and so much more.
There are a total of 21 short stories that comprise this book. They are all each their own separate, short story, but together they are a beautiful manuscript about the power of love and the love of power. An absolute must read
