Title: Please See Us
This was on my list of amends reads. I felt I judged this book too harshly and without a proper attempt at reading it the first go-round. Yes, even I can admit when I’ve been wrong, and I would like to say this turned out to be quite an entertaining story. I was correct that it was dark, but that just made me cheer for these two women all the more.
Mz. Mullen paints Atlantic City as a dingy, has-been-city, along the Atlantic Seaboard. A place where women-of-ill-repute made their dollars the only way they knew how, and a serial killer lurked in the shadows. I don’t need to tell you how serial killers are drawn like moths to a flame when it comes to women-of-ill-repute.
Clara ‘Voyant,’ a fortune teller, whom comes complete with a crystal ball and a deck of tarot cards, starts seeing visions she cannot ignore. She’s always been tapped into this, her sixth sense, but this has gone to a whole new level.
Meet Lily, she has (basically)ran away from her life in trendy New York when her partner, an up-and-coming artist, decides to incorporate sounds he’s recorded from their bedroom exploits into his latest art exhibit. Unbeknownst to her, until she hears her sex sounds echoing through the walls of the gallery where he is exhibiting. After telling him off really well she runs to Atlantic City, taking a paltry job at the front desk to a (hardly used) salon while trying to get her life in order.
Lily was warned to stay far and away from the likes of Clara Voyant, but fate had other designs on this unlikely pair. Can the two of them figure out what’s really going on along the boardwalk before it’s too late and more women disappear? Themselves included?
