Mz. Harris has come up with a new (to me, anyway) way for humans to turn into vampires. In Mz. Harris’ world it’s a lot more complicated than the usual bite. Seems to involve a bit more physics and chemistry know how than the simple, yet classic, bite. In this universe the human has to be drained of blood to the point of almost dying and then they have to drink the vampire blood right at the correct time, then they can die the mandatory three days and resurrect as the undead. Seems a bit like a science experiment for each successfully turned vampire.
I just don’t think it’s a very reliable way to turn. First off, most vampires don’t know how to stop drinking blood once they get started, and Mz. Harris indicated this lack of self control once feeding begins was no different for her coven, yet the race of vampires manages to still carry on.
According to Mz. Harris, this new world she depicts has adopted a point of view in which it has become cool to identify as a vampire and for humans to become besties with one. Some chicks even like to get bitten during sexual activity. This is referred to as a fang-banger.
According to Bill, the vampire, there is no emotional connection to human people and therefore vampires have no qualms about sucking a human dry. And despite all that these humans still want to congregate with the undead and drink with them and be party buddies?
In all, I don’t think this book is terrible, I just didn’t get sucked in.
